What are Wood Pellets?
Wood pellets are a biomass fuel created by compressing sawdust to produce a cylindrical shaped pellet. Produced primarily from clean virgin timber, wood pellet are one of the most popular and most eco-friendly renewable energy sources in the world.
During production, wood pellets a manufactured by compressing 3.15mm sawdust though a dye to form a 6mm diameter wood pellet. As the pellet protrudes through the dye it is cut to produce a wood pellet measuring between 10 and 45mm in length. It is the heat produced through this process that melts the natural lignin within the timber, which in turn acts as a binding agent. It is this, along with the compression process that gives the wood pellet its bulk density and high durability.
This process gives the wood pellet the durability required to withstand multiple handling and pneumatic delivery into the customers wood pellet store.
The wood pellets are produced to an ENplus A1. This accreditation ensures that wood pellet quality is maintained throughout the supply chain and the producers and distributors adhere to strict quality assurance protocols to ensure customer satisfaction.
PBE Fuels Bulk Wood Pellets
The majority of wood pellets sold by PBE Fuels are as a bulk product. These are delivered using specialist vehicles designed to maintain pellet quality during delivery. Wood pellets are predominantly ‘blown’ into a purpose built wood pellet store. With a maximum capacity 19 tonnes, our vehicles are able to carry sufficient volume to service higher capacity usage customers but also have the ability to reach smaller domestic and rural customers through the use of our 6 and 8 wheeled vehicles.
Unlike the delivery of fuel oils, wood pellet deliveries require a greater understanding of the customers heating system.
There are many factors which must be taken into consideration when purchasing ENplus A1 wood pellets as a bulk delivery. In order to maintain wood pellet quality, managing particular elements of the delivery process is vital.
Wood pellets are only bound by the natural lignin within the timber. This makes them vulnerable to degradation if they are not handled in accordance to set quality assurance and storage guidelines.
Vehicle access into the property is key. It is important to be able to position the delivery vehicle as close to the store as practicable. As a general rule, the advisable maximum blowing distance for a bulk delivery of wood pellets should be up to 20 metres, However the shorter the distance, the better. Once the distance is exceeded 20 metres, there is a potential for pellet break up and therefore the fuel can fall below the A1 quality specification stipulated with the ENplus. Inclines and corners will also effect wood pellet quality more so than delivering in a straight horizontal line. Where this does occur, overall blowing distance must be reduced to compensate.
Wood pellets can also be damaged if the delivery pipework and/or wood pellet store have not been designed correctly. The European Pellet Council has produced an wood pellet storage guide that gives customers and installers detailed information on the design of wood pellet stores in order to maximise storage capacity, advise on the best store design for your heating system and highlight common areas where wood pellet damage is caused in order to minimise fuel damage.
Prior to any new bulk wood pellets delivery, we ask for a pre delivery checklist to be completed. This not only supplies PBE Fuels with key account and contact information, but also, through the supply of system details, access and suggested routes to the property, allows us to ensure that we are able to carry out the delivery safely and maintain the ENplus A1 product quality throughout the delivery process.
All of our drivers are experienced and trained in the delivery of wood pellets in order to maintain pellet integrity to ENplus A1. The technique for delivery is different for every customer and the driver ensures that all factors are taken into account in order to deliver the highest quality product possible.
Are drivers are happy to help in any way they can and if you have any specific questions about any aspect of our service please do not hesitate to speak to them.
Details of the Enplus A1 accreditation, wood pellet storage and our pre delivery checklist are all available to download on our resources page. If you have any specific questions, please contact our office for further information.
PBE Fuels Bagged Wood Pellets
Wood pellets can either be bagged during the production by the manufacturer or at trader distribution centres. Bagged wood pellets are ideally suited to customers with restricted vehicle access and storage or for free standing wood pellet stoves. They are convenient to handle individually for systems with lower usage. All bagged wood pellets supplied by PBE Fuels are pre bagged at the point of manufacture. This reduces the wood pellet handling, increasing pellet quality.
We supply 10kg Balcas Brites ENplus A1 bagged wood pellets. These are available as individual bags or one tonne pallets. Bagged wood pellets can be delivered directly to you using our local haulier, or can be can be collected from our depot.
